Sometimes when I'm around certain members of my family they remind me that I "have to talk" to everyone!! That I just can't stand or sit there but that I have to find out who this person next to me is!! And example: ( I'm wondering if it is a family trait; or just me??) I don't know but this is the next question to all of you:
Have you every struck up an enjoyable conversation with a total stranger?

Twice in NYC: Recently with Diane and Kaia, as we were waiting in line for a taste of the "Best Pizza in NYC"; I ended up sitting by this man; and from him I learned: "if you see a line outside a restaurant get in it-- because it must be good; drive by others !! Broadway shows that are a must are: "Hairspray", "Mama Mia", and "Lion King"!! And is really that cold in Minnesota; and if so what do you do for fun??? ( I didn't realize Kaia had put a bet with Diane that I'd be talking to that man within 15 seconds! and she won!!!)
If you haven't experienced the subway during "rush hour" you need to do it! Because when you're smashed up next to another person; what else are you going to do but ask "what do you do?" He was a steel worker; his father was one; as well as his grandfather; just carrying on tradition.
If it is a family trait, it missed me. Betty
I think it must be a family trait. I do remember my Mom saying that to me and for sure my brothers a number of times.
I talk to complete strangers all of the time. Most recently I was flying to Vegas for a business trip. I was in the middle seat (which I hate) with a lady sitting in the window seat and a man sitting in the aisle seat. I started chatting with the lady about where she was from. Someplace in Michigan. As we were chatting the man in the aisle seat spoke up and stated tha the was also from Michigan. They found out that they lived relatively close to each other and knew some of the same people. Amazing how conversation can make you realize what a small world it is.

We think taking up conversations with strangers is partly a inherited trait and partly being born and raised in the mid west. When Bob and Doris visited us a number of years ago here in Sun City West they would stike up a conversation with persons when ever the opportunity was there. We remember particularly our trip to the Grand Canyon where Bob would talk to any one who were, like us, viewing the canyon. We strike up conversations when ever we golf as here many persons are transplants from other parts of the country and the natural tendency is to wonder where are they from. We have actually talked to golfers who know where Fedora South Dakota is.

Those who know my daughter, Hayley, know she does not talk to anybody. Well, she called the other night to say that somebody had her say she was from South Dakota (she lives in Washburn, North Dakota) and they wanted to know more. It turned out that the man grew up not far from here in Minnesota, and that his cousin lives in Revillo (where I teach). Betty
I have taught parent education here in Cottage Grove, Mn. for many years. The first week of class a Mom shared she grew up in Rapid City ,SD; so I went and visited her; she had gone to Vermillion for college and her rooma mate was a Zoss girl from Forestburg; so she knew where Fedora was and Artesian; and than the next week she said well my Mom lived in Artesian when she was younger (Cnythia Nelson); the next week she comes in and says: We are distant relatives in a way!!" Cecil is a close relative of hers and he married Dakota Threadgold;so we had a good visit; so it is a small world after all. Kathie
