We are wondering where the hunting shack is? Also wondering about the rooster corner? That small inset of the Fedora sign--is that all that is left of the old town? Phyllis & Jim
Jim, the hunting shack is a 1/2 mile east of the Glenview dhurch and a mile north; the Westaberg place. There was a grainery in good shape so they used it to build a nice looking cabin. Rooster corner is 1/2 mile from the church and got it's name because of the amount of roosters that fly out of there at any one time. "A sight to behold!" And the Fedora sign is still standing on the west side of town on Highway 34. We hoped people could see the bullet holes in the sign, but it is too small. There are a few buildings still standing in Fedora along with the grocery store, a new firehall, etc. We are all looking forward to the pheasant "opener" on Saturday. Lots of family are coming!! Kathie
Kathie, Is this the offical Rooster Corner or is there more than one? I was thinking Rooster Corner was in the Winfred or Madison area. I could certainly be wrong.
wodering how many pheasnts were bagged in the rooster coener on opening day? Is the Glenview Church still standing? We had the idea it was gone. Ddid Mary Ischen marry Westeberg? Is he the man mentioned in that book and film of the young man who went and died in Alaska? Phyllis I JIm
As of today, October 25, the pheasant count is 431. Glenview Church is just a granite stone memorial these days. I would say that the Alaska Westeberg (Wayne, I think) would be a son, but Donald would know more as he knows him. I just got home from Donald's 60th birthday party.
Just for your information, Fedora, SD must be the fastes growing town in America---In April, I moved into Howard Fish (formerly Effie Morgan and before that Clyde & Edith Scott)house--raising the population to 11. Then in July, Shane Davids moved into his dad's (Bill) house on the north end of town--now this month, Leora O'Neal sold her house to a family with 7 children, so totally, have over a 100% growth rate in Fedora. dt
tried to send yesterday, but don't know what happened to it. Glenview chruch was purchased by Doyle Crane (Ivans son) then by Jay Stevens and moved to Carthage and used as a feed store and then a sporting goods store and now is vacant or used for storage just south of main street. Wayne Westerberg is the son of Mary Ischen and Ray Westerberg-he grew up on the quarter where the hunting shack is located--Wayne was adopted (indian)very smart and can do nearly anything--went to SDSU on engineering scholarship, butleft after a few weeks thinking he knew more that the instructers--and he may have--he ran a custom combine crew and picked up that Alex Super Tramp in Colorado somewhere and he was around Carthage a couple years off & on and worked for Wayne in the Elevator in Carthage. Wayne has his original diary and travels around to colleges giving talkes about the movie and Alex-- out Thomas hopes to spend some time in November visiting with hime when he is back here hunting--Wayne did serve time in the State pen for stealing the signals for TV programs with black boxes and sataliete disc's--his work release job was setting up the electronics department in Walmart when they came to Sioux Falls--he had a key to the store and spent the nights in the pen. I flew Wayne to Chadron Nebraska one time to pick up his plane that he had left there on a combine run. dt
