I remember going to help Avis make lefsa. She was very particular about the potatoes she used; I believe she perferred "white" but if she was over and we had extra mashed potatoes from aupper she willingly took those to make her "next" batch of lefsa. I always enjoyed helping her! I was the "flipper" and would poke any air bubbles that appeared! Fond memories. Now my daughter Katie has taken to enjoy the tradition, too. Though she has moved from just being the flipper to being able "to do it all!!" Knowing that she is the sole lefsa maker in our family-- she tells her brothers and sister that "someday you'll have to pay me for it!!!!" And smiles!! (Katie and I will probably be making it at Wild Bird Lodge this year, while our hunters are trying to shoot those "wild birds") Kathie P.S. Kaia knows the procedure but due to her location (NYC) she doesn't always get to perfect her skills.
Thanksgiving 1980 would have to be the one Heidi and I will never forget. Josh was 6 months, Hannah 1 1/2, and Heidi 4. I broke my ankle the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. The doctor sent me home to lay on the couch for a week to get the swelling down before he put a cast on it. We were going to Fedora, but there was an ice storm so we stayed home. Dale got the flu so I had to make Thanksgiving dinner. Heidi still laughs about having to have macaroni and cheese for Thanksgiving. Betty
the one I remember the most was the time we went to Kathleens floks for dinner and Agnus had store bought pumpkin pie with fake whip cream---I still cannot believe a dairy farmers wife would do such a thing---I still insist that we have real whip cream on real pumpkin pie--Kathleen makes really good pie and she uses Loretta Mooney's (Great Aunt on moms side - Irish)pumpkin pie receipt--dt Kathleen made one for a pot luck church function Sunday night, I cut it and took the first piece and by the time I got through the food line, the entire pie was gone. I received several good complements on the pie, so am anticipating anoter pie or two this week. Her homemade lemon pies with tree ripened lemons are the best followed closely by the banana cream. Now that we have Joan living in AZ with the fresh lemons, I suspect we will be having more lemon pies--Jim Dahl has been shipping us fresh lemons from his tree the past couple of years.
