Agree--good pictures---just an update, Roger, Ty & friend and Steve Sneer and 3 friends from Brookings & myself- killed 25 birds on Saturday, bringing the total to 535 I believe--Thomas and 11 of his Notre Dame buddies are coming the 11th, so if they can hit anything, should add at least 100 to the total. One is his brother-in-law, Dr. Jonathon Patrick (Student body Presidnet at ND a year older than Thomas), that has never been to SD or hunted before--Thomas thinks he will be overwhelmed by the vast openness of rural South Dakota. Am anxious to see what stories they well tell these new comers--one of my favorites was when Thomas brought home a friend his freshman year from ND---Chris was a baseball player from NJ, but had never held a gun before--Thomas kept telling him to hold the butt of the gun up to his nose so he could look rite down the barrel, that pheasants roosted in trees that they were so thick and that if he (Thomas) wasn't the best shot in South Dakota, his brother Barry certainly was. Anyway, when they dropped off a passanger in Sioux Falls, the uncle told Chris to be sure to hold the gun tight to his shoulder. On the way to Kimball for dinner, the cottonwood tree just west of Howard Scotts place was full of pheasants early that morning. At Kimball the boys went out hunting before noon and 6 roosters got up at once and Thomas and Barry knocked them all down and found 5 of the 6. Chris had several shots that day, but did not hit anything. That evening, another roommate called to see how Chris's first day of hunting went and Chris replied "Everything Thomas said was true--pheasants in the trees & good shots" we all laugh about that hunt. However, the best hunting story I know is when Theresa brough her now husband Cole home to hunt one Thanksgiving---I will tell that story another time, I still laugh until I cry on that one.

We enjoyed the Fedora pictures and the pheasant stories. We wonder if there is a fire truck in the building and if so is the building manned by professionals who are on call at all times? Who paid for the building and equipment if any? Where is the building located?
The number of pheasants killed is astounding. Do any of you folks can pheasants like our parents did back in the old days?

The wisdom of our federal government has given grants to local fire departments for equipment, so we now have 3 fire trucks and gobs of equipment. It at least provides a social function for the men of the community. Each pheasant season, there is a pancake breakfast on opening day that generates about $3000 which operates the fire department annually. Budwiser donates the pancake mix and the bank the pork. The building is located where the old Green or Prostrollo gas station was located. The building itself was the old Sherman gas station building in Howard--the business went broke and the building was sold and moved to Fedora and then repainted and the addition was built on. There is a fire "Bar" phone numbers that ring in peoples houses when a fire call comes in-- all fire calls now come to the dispatch office in sherrifs office in Howard--for Artesian also. Kieffer's gas station really mans the place during the day--only business in town with employees. In Artesian, when the fire bar goes off, it rings into the bank and bar, but the bar isn't open during the day, so I usually drive a fire truck to the fire and hope some farmers received the call on their home phones--usually they do, but there has been times I am the only one at the fire for a while. We usually have a summer intern work in the bank in Artesian (some college student) and they get all excited that their first priority is to man the fire truck.
I have had Bev Donahue can the left over pheasants in the summer following pheasant season. However, last summer, someone stole all of Barry & Nicole's pheasants at Clark, so had to take our left overs up there for them to send to their hunters (160 last year) but should have a bunch this year, must be up 100 or so now. Joan and Theresa ate a lot of pheasant when in college- I think I am down to 3 quarts of canned pheasant left from two years ago. Canned pheasant and meat are still one of my favorite foods. used as gravy on mashed potatoes and home made noodles. We'll try to remember to bring some to AZ when we come down over christmas to see Joan and Willy--Katie is going to a softball clinic in Tuscon in December. dt

In the picture of the pheasant cleaners, the first person on the left in red shirt is Saushen (sp??), Erin Froehlich's husband--just across the table from him is Mike Peterson, Lynn Threadgold's husband (the second person on the right side) and the last person on the right side clear in the back without a cap is Ty Nordtvedt, Kathie & Rogers youngest. The new facility for cleaning the birds worked out really great, especially in crappy weather. dt

Hunting continues going GREAT--Thomas and his ND buddies are here now--his brother-in-law, Jonathon Patric, left for home, but had a good time--he had never been to SD or hunting before, so didn't know what to think, but said he is coming back for sure--liked the hunting shack, Bud-lite for breakfast--no shaving--Camel Cigs (even for a heart doctor)---shooting rabbits with 44 cal pistol--shooting assult rifle--he even killed a couple pheasants with my 870 shotgun--Thomas has pictures of all to harass his mother-in-law, who was sure her son would return in a box, either forzen to death or full of bullet holes.
Group anticipating deer season in morning with the warm up tonight in Artesian at the bar for the annual "Knife sharpening party"
