Reindeer tradition

As you may or may not remember, Keeda and I made rudolph treats with almond joy candy bars last year. She and Kebba liked them and could not understand their classmates not liking coconut or almonds. This year we tried something else and decided it would be a tradition to make reindeer cookies for the class.

I found this picture on the internet from an article about these bicycle cars called velomobiles racing across the US. About 50 started on the west coast and will end up on the east cost. Dale and I saw many of them between Webster and Groton today. They are a strange sight to see driving down the highway and reminded me of a movie I saw where high school students went to Australia for a race but their cars had batteries. These were peddled. HUGO — Old T-shirts are providing a small amount of comfort to Haiti’s homeless.

A South Dakota church is collecting the cotton discards and weaving them into thick mats for the multitudes who sleep on the ground.

Hugo resident Gretchen Boyd is helping the small congregation collect the shirts. She has about 600 in her garage at the moment waiting to make the trip to tiny LaBolt, S.D.

Her great-grandparents attended LaBolt Evangelical Covenant Church, as did her grandparents and mother; Boyd and her sister were baptized there. The ladies in the congregation felt woven mats made from old T-shirts was a worthwhile ministry for the earthquake-stricken inhabitants of Haiti, so the call went out.

Boyd felt the collection drive tied in nicely with a “Pay it Forward” program started Nov. 6 by the promotional product industry in which she works. The idea is to promote volunteerism as a way to build a sense of community and make a positive impact, she said. “T-shirts happen to be a big part of what we sell, so it’s a nice fit.”

After years working in radio, the small business owner started Boyd’s Promos over a year ago, selling imprintable marketing and promotional items. Before that, she was a disc jockey, or on-air personality, for KTIS, a Christian station, and then sold advertising for CBS radio. Boyd left the corporate world of broadcast to “be my own boss and focus on things important to me.”

One priority is devoting time and energy to the Haiti program. “It happened to be something my family’s church was working on and I wanted to support the program,” she said.

Promotional material Boyd hands to friends and clients describe the T-shirt program and the plight of Haiti’s 90 million inhabitants. Statistics are included like the number who live in poverty: About 80 percent and the number who never go to school: almost half. Unemployment is 70 percent.

“The need is great” she said. “Thousands of children are sleeping directly on cold and hard dirt floors.”

T-shirts are cut into long strips that are tightly twisted and crocheted into the woven mats. “They’re like the old rag rugs made by past generations,” Boyd explained. It takes about 20 T-shirts per mat.

She is also offering a 10 percent discount off the purchase of new T-shirt orders from churches, sports organizations or businesses that donate five or more shirts.

She is making the three-hour trek to South Dakota early next month with the hundreds of shirts collected to date. No doubt, it will be nice to have her garage back, at least temporarily. Boyd is collecting shirts as long as people choose to donate.

This is from the Artesian Centennial Book. There is more information about each of the children that I can type in if anybody wants to know more.

Oscar Christian Threadgold and Hannah Bergette Gruthoug were married September 9, 1890 at Argyle, Wisconsin. There is no exact record of when they came to South Dakota, but it seemed it was about 1895 that they came to Benedict Township near Artesian. They had two children then. Henry Robert and Blanche Sylvana. They had six more sons born after coming to Artesian. James Orville, Frank Freeman, Harvey Bernell, Victor William, Twins Ray H. and Ralph O. Blanche died at age 4 of spinal meningitis. Ralph died at age 12 of heart trouble. Oscar had a fine team of horses. He was a house mover and did any other type of work which required strong teams. He also helped dig wells. He was one of the first men in the area to own a steam threshing machine. Hannah had milk cows. They were her pride and joy She and the boys delivered milk and cream in town. She also raised large flocks of turkeys and gardens which were bountiful and beautiful. Oscar, in later years, operated the Fairmont Creamery in Artesian. Hannah was a very faithful worker in the Lutheran Church. She, Julia Moe and Bessie Severson spent many days baking Lefse and other goodies for the big Ludefish and Lefse dinners that the church sponsored. She also make and quilted many beautiful quilts which she sold to ladies from Mitchell, Huron, Sioux Falls, and Woonsocket. She was a victim of glaucoma and spent the last 10 years of her life without her eyesight. She died in 1947 and Oscar in 1950.

In Sioux Falls, there are two homes for families with children staying at both Sanford and Avera McKennan Hospitals.

Rich and Jess Uckert's baby boy is celebrating his 8-month birthday. Since the day little Grady was born on February 12, he's been here at Sanford's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

“Grady's survived the longest any baby with his severe lung disease has had. We've been told he has the most severe lung disease they've ever seen,” Grady’s dad Rich Uckert said.

Grady was born three months too soon. His prognosis right now is touch and go, but his mom and dad know he's in the best hands.

Thanks to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, they're only steps away.

“We didn't know what Ronald McDonald exactly was, the house you know, until you need it and we learned fast,” Rich said.

The Uckert's are from Clear Lake, South Dakota, about an hour and a half away. So when they're not here with their baby, they're here at their home-away-from-home.

“Both houses are full with a waiting list almost every night, which really came as a great surprise to the charity,” Executive Director MJ Schmidt said.

They expected to be full with a waiting list sometime over the years, but not in the first six months of the second house opening in Sioux Falls.

Schmidt says that's thanks to growth in specialized medical care right here in Sioux Falls.

“We're going to see a direct reflection of whatever they're doing at either of the hospitals,” Schmidt said.

Families here can stay as long as their child is in the hospital, which can be anywhere from a single night to an entire year.

“We didn't know we'd be here this long. We didn't know the course Grady would take,” Rich said.

Their stay wouldn't be possible without the generous help of others.

“The organization depends almost entirely on donations to keep our doors open,” Schmidt said.

It allows the Uckerts to be in walking distance of their baby and not financially broken when their family finally gets to go home.

“The doctor's here, you know, they're so knowledgeable. The experience they have is tremendous and we just feel very lucky that we can be so close to home still and get this type of care,” Rich said.

Edwin Kroupa, 78, Mitchell, formerly of Kimball, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at Firesteel Healthcare Center, Mitchell.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Kimball, with the Rev. Andrew Swietowchowski officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church, with a 7 p.m. wake service.

Shearer-Mount Funeral Home in Kimball is assisting with arrangements.

He was born on Aug. 30, 1932, in Ethan to Otto and Marie (Oster) Kroupa.

He attended Brchan Elementary School in Lyon Township and graduated from Kimball High School in 1951.

On June 21, 1953, he married Delores Burg.

He farmed and ranched in Lyon Township all his life.

He was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Lyon Township School Board and was a 4-H leader.

He is survived by his former wife, five children: Marvin and wife Eileen, Kimball; Cheryl Younkin and husband Blair, Arlington, Texas; Diane Kroupa and husband Bob Fackler, Plymouth, Minn.; Greg and wife Renette, White Lake; and Robert and wife Sonya, Pukwana; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen; a grandson, his parents and a brother, Orville.

Sleeping mat for Haiti

At the Fedora 125th, Audrey and I were talking about a Sioux Falls church that was making sleeping mats out of old t-shirts to send to Haiti. Both had heard about it in the news and had it on our minds that we could do something like that. Well, I started a community project in LaBolt and here is my first mat. I just learned to crochet on Thursday and finished it last night (Saturday) so it was not that hard. My picture taking is not that great. I think it looks better in real life. Most of the t-shirts were Dale's railroad orange or Kathie's running t-shirts.

Dale and I went to an auction in Dawson, MN to check out a horse drawn mail cart from LaBolt. A guy from LaBolt was there to buy it for the town but it went too high. They had a covered wagon and other horse drawn vehicles. I will put more pictures on later. It takes me a while to figure out how to get them off the camera and the size changed so they can be used. Anyway, the day brought back Grandpa Harvey memories.

Donald, Dale, Heidi, Hayley, Kebba, Keeda, and I put flowers on the graves. Heidi and Hayley tried to e-mail the pictures to me but it did not work. Only one came through and Heidi took a different one of grandpa and grandma T today. If Donald keeps the pictures and somebody figures out how to e-mail them there are two of the Williams. Keeda had a great time putting flowers on graves. Harlyn and Audrey had flowers for a while.

Happy Mothers Day to all of us Mom's. Here are some that I had in a file and thought they were good:
A gift of words: They grew up in the inner sity; "I asked my mother why we couldn't travel someplace out of the housing project where we lived. She led me by the hand to the library and got me a library card. She sat me down and told me "At the library you can go anywhere you want when you read a book. Itll never gorget the love for reading that she instilled in me and the marvelous adventures I've had just by visiting the library."

My Irish grandmaother passed this advice down to my mother, sho passed it down to me: "There's alwasy room for one more. We can water down the soup".

"When all is sadi and done, the only thing that matters is the way you treat people, that's what people will remember about you."

Hi! I forgot mention, I agreed to be a part of a new research study by mr surgeron Dr. Lee. He designed a special devise that would go into the same spot of my brain as they are going. But it Has a special tip that will read the demicals of the brain (specifically, where the lack of it causes parkinson's). I was patient #2 to agree to it. Well, he proceeded into my brain and wouldnt you know it i have lots of dopamine!! They were shocked; that we made history; I would only know this because I was a wake and the crew of 15 doctors who were working on me all cheered!
Now as to what will they do with this I don't know. I'm sure he is asking if she has dopamine why isn't it working? Anyway, anotherbit of history. Kathie

Deep Brain Stimulation--A Success!!

HI! I went to Mayo this morning and did my first test run to see if the probs worked. I went into my appointment without being on my meds and the electrical current that goes through them worked. We started off at a low number increasing as the months go by-- with an increase in the stimulation the medication I take will decrease which is what I'm looking for. A success! ABC News--Brain Surgery!

I don't know if anyone watched the ABC National news last night (18th). They showed a surgeron from Mayo Clinic doing the Deep Brain Stimulation procedure on a patient (a violinist from the Mpls. orchestra). He has essential tremors, which is similar to Parkinson's. Anway, the surgery was successful--and that will be my surgeon on April 5th at Mayo. So that makes me feel more confident. I go down April 1st for all the prelims---go home--stop my medicine on Sunday and the surgery is scheduled for 5:30 AM the 5th!! Kathie Nordtvedt

since before Christmas Dawna has ven in and out or the hospital and rehab.Her granddaughter Tamara and fiance have been living with her so when we called a couple weeks ago to inquire how Dawna was feeling Tamara said she was back in the hospital. The following is a reply from Dee(her daughter) on Dawna's current state of health. Dawna is currently in a convelescent care facility with not much hope of returning home for quite some time, if ever. She requires 24 hour care and is on oxygen 24 hours a day. She has lost a lot of her cognnetive skills and does not have much of a memory.She is now taking aricept and it has helped but she has difficulty rationalizing things. I wanted to share the link of advertisement of my husband's new Wine bar that was on the news tonight. Ernesto's (Spanish word for Ernest) thought if I shared it with you I could maybe perc some family interest to come visit us (hate not having family near by)!!!! Dieter (retired FBI special agent and real estate developer for historic development) is a fan of the author Ernest Hemingway and based his Wine bar on Hemingway's life and writings. Dieter rehabbed this old building with trees growing out of it and animals flowing in and out and has now been awarded as one of the 14 buildings in the St. Louis metropolitan area as the best historic rehabs.
