Hurrican Gustav

Last week, I got back from Red Cross disaster relief in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I was there 2 weeks doing damage assessment. I find these trips very interesting but 2 weeks of sleeping on a cot with 150-200 people in the same room is enough for me. About 3000 homes had major damage or were destroyed. Most of the damage was from trees falling on the homes. I got there about 4 days after the hurricane and there were no stop lights (every corner was a 4 way stop), no stores open, no gas stations open. That's kind of an eery feeling when there are no services available. There were 1000 utility trucks from around the country trying to restore power. I think every power line in the state was down.

Green Hour--National Wildlife Federation

To all you "younger" parents and/or grandparents. I was just listening to a discussion among the Early Childhood Family Education staff that I used to work at and they are saying how important it is that our children be "re-exposed" (daily) to the good outdoors! There is an excellent website developed by National Wildlife Federation entitled "Green Hour". It is suppose to be an excellent web sites for parents. And children would certainly benefit if grandparents knew about it too. Hope you find it helpful. Kathie

Pilgrim Hats

I thought this recipe sounded easy and fun and remember we are descendants of the Mayflower!  There was no picture with the recipe.

Pilgrim Hats  (from Taste of Home)
1 cup vanilla frosting
7 drops yellow food coloring
32 miniature peanut butter cups
1 package fudge-striped cookies
32 pieces orange mini Chiclets gum

In a small shallow bowl, combine frosting and food coloring.  Remove paper liners from peanut butter cups.  Holding the bottom of a peanut butter cup, dip top of cup in yellow frosting.  Position over center hole of a cookie, forming the hatband and crown.  Add a buckle of Chiclets gum.  Repeat with remaining cups and cookies.

Yield:  32 cookies

Grandpa T

Robert Threadgold would have been 85 September 20.

Another book

I decided nobody would go back to the June question of the month, so will put this book in a new post. I found a synopsis on the internet.  I thought it was a great book.

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult
Synopsis:

In this emotionally charged novel, Jodi Picoult delves beneath the surface of a small town to explore what it means to be different in our society.

In Sterling, New Hampshire, 17-year-old high school student Peter Houghton has endured years of verbal and physical abuse at the hands of classmates. His best friend, Josie Cormier, succumbed to peer pressure and now hangs out with the popular crowd that often instigates the harassment. One final incident of bullying sends Peter over the edge and leads him to commit an act of violence that forever changes the lives of Sterling’s residents.

Even those who were not inside the school that morning find their lives in an upheaval, including Alex Cormier. The superior court judge assigned to the Houghton case, Alex—whose daughter, Josie, witnessed the events that unfolded—must decide whether or not to step down. She’s torn between presiding over the biggest case of her career and knowing that doing so will cause an even wider chasm in her relationship with her emotionally fragile daughter. Josie, meanwhile, claims she can’t remember what happened in the last fatal minutes of Peter’s rampage. Or can she? And Peter’s parents, Lacy and Lewis Houghton, ceaselessly examine the past to see what they might have said or done to compel their son to such extremes.

Breakfast Idea for Large Gatherings!!

We had company this past week-end and I had always wanted to try this "Omelet in a Bag" idea, so I did , and it worked great!! All those involved had fun, and wanted it again the next morning!! And it was easy!! And good!!
Basically you get take a resealable freezer bag (we used quart size); add as many eggs as you want; reseal; than shake or squeeze; reopen to add ham, onions, peppers, mushrooms, cheese, salsa, etc.; reseal ; put your name on with permanent marker and than place it in a pot of boiling water for 13 minutes. (8 can be cooked at once of the pot is large enough).
Try it the next time you have a group!
Just go on google and put in "Omelet in a Bag" for the complete recipe and directions. If not e-mail me or call me.
Have fun.
